The Labor Exchange movement gained momentum across the United States in the late 1890s, promoting an alternative economic system in which goods and services produced by members could be purchased with scrip denominated in hours of labor. This particular certificate represented one-quarter hour of work. The notes are rich in symbolic imagery—especially on their backs. The reverse of this example depicts the Labor Exchange train charging forward toward a damaged “Progress Stop – Legal Tender Toll Gate,” from which bags of gold and silver are being swept aside. Notes issued by West Coast branches are considerably scarcer than those from their East Coast counterparts.
