Poughkeepsie, New York – City Bank of 10-10-20-20 1860 Proof Uncut Sheet COPY

This is a COPY of a gorgeous two-color American Bank Note Company proof from the City Bank of Poughkeepsie and distinctive with its widely spaced «X X» red protectors. The green lace tint is the same as used on the other denominations from the series, slightly darker over the signature blocks. At the top center is an eagle and shield vignette, just under the curved TEN DOLLARS, and flanking each side are large red «X»protectors, widely separated to avoid confusion with a compact «XX» fora $20 note. At the lower left is an iconic and earlier size ABN vignette The Reapers used on several Obsoletes (the later version was larger and engraved by George F.C. Smillie for use on world notes). At the lower right is the octagonal New York Bank Seal. A full, very fine lace green tint covers the note, and deep red «20» protectors flank the center vignette. This show-stopping layout is divided into two sections by a border that goes around the perimeter and travels vertically about ¼ from the left, forming a cartouche. Within that area at left is a floating allegorical female, Morning as originally engraved for Bald, Cousland & Co., holding a branch. She is barely contained by the rectangular frame, as her head, feet and drapery touch the edges. The other ¾ of the note shows a portrait of a sophisticated woman beneath the arced title. Contrasted with the subtle green tint and vibrant red of the counters, the black and white images are magnificent. This is a professional REPRODUCTION of the original proof sheet. The original sheet would sell in excess of$10,000. These reproductions are ideal for framing in an office or den.
